Getting an eSIM for Japan is simple and can be done online before you even pack your bags. Because it is a digital SIM card built into your phone, you do not need to wait for a card in the mail or stand in a long airport line. You buy it online, scan a quick QR code, and you will have working data the moment your flight touches down.
Make sure your phone is ready
Before spending any money on a plan, you need to check two simple things on your smartphone:
- Your phone must be completely unlocked: If you are on a monthly payment plan with a US carrier, they might have locked your device. Call them or check your settings to make sure your phone can accept outside networks, or an international eSIM will not work.
- Your phone must support eSIM tech: Most modern smartphones built over the last few years are compatible. For an iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular. Set it up before you fly
The best practice is to handle the setup the day before you leave your home country while connected to your home Wi-Fi.
First, buy your plan. Go to your chosen provider’s website or download their app, pick your Japan package, and complete the checkout. It usually takes less than five minutes.
Next, scan the QR code. The provider will email you a QR code before you leave. Open your phone’s cellular settings, tap “Add eSIM,” and scan the code to download the profile to your phone.

The automatic data backup mistake to avoid
