Yes, you can absolutely drink the tap water in your Tokyo and Kyoto hotel rooms.
Japan has some of the strictest water quality laws in the world. The national government tests for over 50 separate safety parameters, which is more than double what the World Health Organization recommends. The water coming out of your hotel bathroom sink is 100% clean, safe, and filtered to the highest standard.
A few helpful tips about the water in each city:
- Tokyo water: Tokyo’s water is safe, but because it is a massive metropolis, the water is treated with a safe amount of chlorine to keep it clean through the long pipe system. Because of this, you might notice a very faint chlorine smell or taste. If you do not like the taste, letting the cold tap run for 30 seconds helps, or you can fill a pitcher and put it in your hotel mini-fridge to cool down.
- Kyoto water: Kyoto’s water is famous for being incredibly soft and clean, as it is sourced largely from Lake Biwa and the surrounding mountains. It usually has a very mild, slightly sweet, and neutral taste with almost no noticeable chlorine flavor.
The only exception to the rule: If you are staying in a historical wooden guesthouse (a traditional ryokan) or a very old boutique building constructed before the 1980s, the aging internal pipes of that specific property might affect the taste or color of the water. If the building looks centuries old and you are hesitant, just use bottled water to be safe. Otherwise, feel free to fill up your reusable travel bottle straight from your hotel sink and save your money.
